I’m trying desperately to pull ahead a bit on the pages and get a buffer going before I have to head to Glasgow for Christmas, as well as make a start on some commission work, but it isn’t going especially well. I’m considering calling a two week break on the comic over Christmas, since if I can help it I don’t want to move my extremely expensive tablet which I can’t afford to replace when I go visit my parents, especially since I suspect this was the ultimate cause of death with my last tablet. On the other hand… I hate not updating.
Urrrggghhh christmas raaage

I realize I come here regularly for my dose of lovely windblown hair! <3

Windblown hair is the best kind of hair! Aghhh I love drawing hair.

Man, I’m loving the detailed face close-ups!
Kyethn
Feels like a bit of a cheat to be honest, they’re easier and quicker to draw than more zoomed out shots, but I think it suits the scene. 🙂

Your comic is so amazing and detailed!! Keep up the great work!
Also: I rather like this chap, he seems nice.
Kyethn
Thank you! As for Galak, we shall seeeee.

A very nice page, its lovely seeing their relationship evolve in such a fashion. 🙂
Kyethn
Thank you. 🙂 Writing dialogue between these two is a guilty pleasure of mine.

About the whole Christmas thing, it sounds like you should take the two week Hiatus.
I once asked Lar DeSouza, artist for the comics Looking for Group and Least I Could do, if he had any advice for starting web comic writers/artists. Among many other things, a key recommendation he made was that no matter what, you have to have fun while doing it. As important as building your fanbase through loyal updating is, don’t do anything that’s going to spoil the process of making this comic. This goes doubly for comics with work intensive art, such as this one. Otherwise you’ll start to hate it/second guess yourself every step of the way, only to spiral down and want to ragequit when the internet retard-parade comes marching along.
You’ve had 113 pages without a single missed update, I think people can wait over the Christmas holidays. You’ve announced ahead of time the reasons why you can’t update it, so it’s not a question of you being an ’unreliable’ artist. Sure, some of the flock are going to mindlessly chant “MOAR, MOAR! WHER IZ MA COMIC?!!?!”, but they’re not your loyal fanbase. Take the time to relax, re-evaluate, and maybe even get some pages as buffer.
Kyethn
Thanks for the vote of support, this really does make me feel better about the whole thing. I’ve settled on a bit of a compromise, I’ll be updating with artwork over Christmas to keep a flow of content going. I can’t say this enough, but it really is great to have such considerate and patient readers.

I second NDBurke! If you need to take the time off take it.
In the future if you have a buffer that would be awesome and appreciated, but sensible people will understand if you need to take a break.
Kyethn
Thanks! A buffer would be ideal, but I think I realised too late that I would need one. In the past I’ve been extremely bad at working ahead, it’s as if I lose the urge to work as soon as I realise I have any sort of breathing space. Not a very smart approach, but I’ve had a pretty good update record so far regardless, so I think it’s just what works best for me. 🙂 …except for during large holidays, evidently. Next Christmas will be a bit more organised, hopefully.

I adore your comic– the lush backgrounds, the expressive faces!!– and I’m dying to see what happens next, but I absolutely think you should take the break, you deserve it!
Enjoy the holidays!
Kyethn
Thank you! Enjoy your holidays too. 🙂

Hey, maybe while you’re on holidays, do some pencil linework when you get a chance so that when you get back, you can bust out some pages a little more quickly than on average? It’s not a perfect balance, but it allows you to have a mostly break, but keeps your steam going for the project!
Best of luck coming to a decision! Your pages are fabulous, as always!
Kyethn
I think that’s a good plan, pencils and paper are much less fragile to carry around. 🙂 The lineart is the part that takes me the most time anyway, so I can probably make a good start on the next scene over the break.
Rhi
Take the two week break and enjoy christmas, a lot of your readers are probably going to be caught up in the holidays anyways so take a break and start fresh in the new year.
Kyethn
That’s true. Hopefully not too many people are taking time out of their christmas day to check on webcomics, haha.

I just started reading a few hours ago, while print an assignment for class. And now I actually have to GO to class, and I’m running late because I keep pressing “Next”. Damn you, next button. Love it. This comic is going straight to the (proverbial) pool room!
I shall continue reading as soon as I get home.
…
After one more “next”.
