Hey chaps, I wasn’t able to manage a page this week due to opting to spend some time with a good friend who’s leaving town, but I figured rather than tumbling into radio silence again, I’d try to at least post something relevant and throw myself on your mercy.
So here’s a theme for Seras Daya that I composed a while back and never really posted anywhere, because what do you even do with a soundtrack for a webcomic?

It’s a fun hobby! I nearly went to university for music (and also chemistry, oddly), but opted to do art in the end, and here we are. I still like to compose stuff from time to time, though.
As for buying Pixar… well, why not dream big?

No problem! I’m glad people seem to like it. I’ve been sitting on a bunch of tracks like this for a while, since I just assumed no one would be that fussed about getting music mixed in with comic stuff.

That’s really cool. If you threw completed chapters into a flash format, like turbo defiant kimikan or parts of homestuck you could run it in the background, but you’d probably want more than the one song…

I was never quite sure about flash format webcomics, though I do like Kimecan quite a lot. As for putting music over it… I don’t know. I actually dedicated a small-but-significant section of my dissertation to detailing why that was probably a bad idea, but I guess this would be less intrusive. I can add it to my already ridiculous to-do list. 🙂
As for wanting more than one song, boy do I have that covered. I could probably release a full album at this point.

I like Kimecan’s story, but I can’t be arsed to read it. I *really* don’t like frame-by-frame railroading and so I always opt for the non-flash version, where the archive turns out unusable for me–the later parts turn out non-scrollable or something. So the only time I try and catch up is when I feel like doing an archive trawl, which isn’t that often.
For vaguely related reasons I won’t be thanking anyone who feels fit to put an auto-play thingy on a page I’m expecting to *read*, and so this stodgy codger will be running away on the double should that happen. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to do something with the music.
You could turn the story into an audiobook* if you happen to have too much time on your hands. Animation** is an option too, and I don’t know which takes more time. Could even try and do both, combining on the voice acting. Should you run a kickstarter and it happens to go on to out-of-control success, for example.
You do risk having to turn the thing into some sort of enterprise then. Start a studio, hire admin staff, and so on.
* Like that spin-off novel to A Girl And Her Fed. Bit of a challenge doing that for a (web)comic.
** Like what erfworld is doing, though I skipped all spoken railroaded youtube things after the first one. Nice show of work, not what I’m looking for when trying to *read*. I’ll have a look-see if any actual animation comes out, of course. No guarantees on what I’ll prefer though.

That was amazing, and incidentally, suits well what we’ve seen of the city! As far as an album is concerned… Listening to an album of your musical representation of the story’s world while reading the comic in book form: worth whatever you’d charge for it :-D.

I think Leylines might be a good example of how you could incorporate more sound into the storytelling of Red Moon Rising, if you wanted to. For example, on http://leylinescomic.com/archive/c06p14/ page, she represents the women singing visually, but also has the audio file in the blog post for the people who want to spend a little longer on the page and hear it. Music’s a big part of that particular webcomic, although unfortunately I can’t find another example of it.
In this case maybe link to the appropriate sound file at the start of the chapter/scene (or maybe in the post at the bottom of each page, depending on how often you feel is appropriate), and then people can choose to listen to it or not as they choose? I certainly enjoyed listening to it and it makes the world a lot richer to be able to have sound as well as your gorgeous visuals!

And I know what you do with a soundtrack for a webcomic.. you put it together as a cd or digital download and offer it for sale!! 😀 Juno of Star Cross’d Destiny is working on the second soundtrack for her webcomic, so you two can totally start a trend. I know I would buy it in a heartbeat!

Thank you! Juno actually got in touch with me over twitter and said exactly what you’re saying (as well as being generally lovely and helpful) so I think that’s what I’m going to end up doing. I’ve been digging through my files and there’s exactly enough there for one decent sized album, so… I guess keep an eye out!
