Well, that’ll teach you to leave the door hanging open.

I thought this page was going to be a lot later than this since I got terribly distracted over at the delightful O31 Ustream, and also Oblivion, and also cable TV. While I absolutely refuse to become one of those webcomickers that stops updating regularly due to gaming or TV or something equally stupid and avoidable, it was nice to just spend the weekend dorking about. Anyway, it’s another case of updating well before it’s even Monday in America (it’s 3am here in Britain), so I don’t feel especially guilty. Hurrah!

I’m having a go at sketching/inking the backgrounds rather than painting them, mainly to see if I can get my interior backgrounds looking a bit less rubbish. I have a lot less trouble with exterior shots (within Red Moon Rising, that’s almost invariably cityscapes or buildings of some sort) simply because they’re easier to boil down to a series of silhouettes. Interior shots are often more detail orientated, which is something I tend to shy away from because it can become very time consuming without looking particularly good. At any rate, for pages like this where the backgrounds are quite important I think it’s probably something I’ll keep working away at.

  1. I think the new style for backgrounds works quite well in today’s comic.

    1. Cheers, Shawn. 🙂 I think I still prefer painting my backgrounds, but this seems a lot more precise for the interior shots.

  2. It looks quite good with the backgrounds like this, though I haven’t got problems with your old ones 😉
I got terribly distracted over […] Oblivion […].
I know that feeling… you got something to do, but then you find a new Mod you wanna try out or you just want to enjoy playing Oblivion… and after that you haven’t got any time left >.<"

    1. Thanks. 🙂 I’ll probably keep experimenting to see if I can hit some middle ground between drawn and painted backgrounds, since they both have their merits.

Oblivion is crazy addictive when I’m in the right mood, though I usually go through phases when it comes to that sort of thing. Next month I’ll probably be back to reading sci fi novels and watching Stargate voraciously.

  3. Well… it’s pretty. But I haven’t a clue what’s happening… and yes, I started from the beginning. I guess I’m easily confused.

    1. I won’t lie, I don’t think this comic is for everyone. At this point in the story (that is to say, rather early on, relatively speaking) there’s a lot of subtext and inferred detail, and not much outright plot explanation going around. While the idea is that there’s supposed to be enough to hook you without really giving away too much until later on, I can appreciate if that’s just plain frustrating for you as a reader. Thanks for giving it a read, anyway. 🙂

  4. awwwww 🙁 Poor kid…..

  5. I get distracted over video games, but it’s more like I play them when I haven’t got that artistic energy. But I quit Final Fantasy XI because it would take away too much time (and money) from art. Last thing I need are MMOs…even fun ones.

  6. Loved Oblivion and in fact all the Elder Scrolls series except the online, just didn’t work for me unfortunately.
